چکیده

This paper describes an algorithm for optimally placing a given number of wavelength converters in all-optical networks with arbitrary topologies. We first introduce the simple network model upon which the algorithm is based. We provide a formulation of the overall network blocking probability when a given number of nodes in the network, is provided with full wavelength conversion capability. We then present our optimal converter placement algorithm and illustrate its working using a simple example. The savings offered by our algorithm in the calculation of blocking performance are analyzed. The benefits of our optimal converter placement algorithm are studied through network examples such as the path, NSFnet and the mesh-torus. Finally, some heuristics for converter placement are presented. q 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

An Efficient Algorithm for Optimal Wavelength Converter Placement on Wavelength-Routed Networks with Arbitrary Topologies

This paper describes an algorithm for optimally placing a given number of wavelength converters in All-Optical Networks(A0Ns) with arbitrary topologies. We first introduce the simple network model upon which the algorithm is based. We explain how the blocking performance of the network can be obtained when a given number of converters are placed at the network nodes. We then present our optimal...

Wavelength converter placement under different RWA algorithms in wavelength-routed all-optical networks

Sparse wavelength conversion and appropriate routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) algorithms are the two key factors in improving the blocking performance in wavelength-routed all-optical networks. It has been shown that the optimal placement of a limited number of wavelength converters in an arbitrary mesh network is an NP-complete problem. There have been various heuristic algorithms propo...

Optimum Regular Logical Topology for Wavelength Routed WDM Networks

Several regular topologies have been proposed to be used as the logical topology for WDM networks. These topologies are usually evaluated and compared based on the metrics related to network performance. It can be simply shown that this is generally not sufficient since better network performance can be achieved by increasing more network facilities. However, doing this eventually increases the...

Sparse-Partial Wavelength Conversion in Wavelength-Routed All-Optical Networks

Wavelength conversion has been shown as one of the key techniques that can improve the blocking performance in a wavelength-routed all-optical network. Given that wavelength converters nowadays are still very expensive, how to make effective use of the limited number of wavelength converters becomes an important issue. In this paper, we propose a novel sparse-partial wavelength conversion (SPWC...

Efficient Algorithms for Wavelength Converter Placement in All-optical Networks

In this paper, we consider the optimal converter placement problem for a given number of converters on a path topology in all-optical WDM networks. The placement of converters on a path divides the path into segments. A segment is deened as a set of links between two consecutive converters on a path. We rst introduce and prove that optimal placement considering end-to-end performance is obtaine...
